It's ideal to hold onto the ball. If you can't hold onto the ball, then throw yourself forward clutching your head and rolling around as if in agony.

Make two strong strides and leap off of your non-dominant foot Use your dominant leg to protect you in the air with your knee level with your stomach Use both hands and in a v shape so the ball will be protected It's always better to mark the ball in front of your position to make it harder for the defender to spoil but I the ball is going to high then push back into the defender as you mark Maintain eye contact with the ball the whole time

You should know how to take a mark if you're in the AFL.

Watch the ball all the way into your hands. Stretch out as far as possible, less chance of being spoiled if you can grab it above the opponent's reach. Basically just practice it as much as possible, if you keep doing it you'll get better at predicting the flight, drop zone etc.
