What's with American sports?

Seriously! No offence to all the Americans on this website but American sports games are boring. I say games and not the sports in general because the sports aren't what I'm concerned about. It's the games themselves that really piss me off and bore me to tears. Like, yesterday I watched the NFL and I swear the game was like 1 minute action 10 minutes commercials repeated over and over again in that sequence. It's unbearable. I choose to live with it when I'm watching the NBA cause I really love it but it's weird that an NBA game lasts for 3 hours when the playing time is just 48 minutes. The same goes for the 60 minutes game time in the NFL. 1 hour game, 2 hour commercials. It gets really frustrating. Now the sport that all Americans love to bash on is football which in 90% of the world refers to what is called soccer in the US. And I don't get why the hate? I mean sure the score is never too huge but the game is interesting, intense, and most of all consistent. As in there's almost constant action with no commercials every two minutes. I mean, yeah there's the occasional delay if there is a foul or an injury or something but overall it's just 90 minutes of almost constant action with only 15 minutes in between the two halves. The rest is all game. So why is it that there are so many commercials on american sports games? And why is it that people in the US seem to be completely OK with having to sit trough the 2 hours of commercials?

P.S. I don't want to offend anyone with this post. I really don't. I actually like most US sports. It's just that the games are so freakin long only because of the commercials.

United States professional sports are televised in order to sell stuff. The game itself is secondary to the commercial interests involved. This is a sad fact, but it is true.

Some people actually watch the games for the entertainment value and creativity of the commercials. The USA is rather weird with regard to televised professional sports, but that's how we do it here!

The world would be pretty boring if all cultures liked the same things. Cultures have evolved separately over time, and they are what they are. You can't really judge them based on your own standards, American football included. It's the ultimate American team-gladitorial expression, and you either get it or you don't. Many love it of course, and I'm not about to call all of them morons.

American football's creation and subsequent popularity had nothing to do with being perfect for corporate TV...it just worked out that way for the corporations; lucky for them, unlucky for us. I agree with your observation that all the pauses and extensions in American sports seem like they're somehow in cahoots with the corporate sponsors, and that combined with the insane ticket prices have left me feeling lukewarm about American pro sports. Yes, there's been a corporate sell-out to some extent. But you still see the pure beauty of the sport because the players are at the top level, and at the university and high school levels you still see the sports in all their glory and integrity.

Suggestion - Go to any university or high school football game where football is important to the locals, and the atmosphere is electric. You should experience it just once.

Pretty much the only American sport is football, but I definitely agree with you! That's why I don't watch (American) football games, they're just so boring, and I think the sport is pointless. They're just hitting each other! Not all Americans are like "FOOTBALL!!!!!" if that's what you think. Many don't like it as I do.

American sports are those nobody else plays

That way, the American teams can win

I'm with you buddy.

They are awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
