sports for girls?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
k so I'm 13 years old, and the only sports I do are figure skating once a week and PE in school. I need a fun sport! I'm not very flexible but idk I could learn, but I don't really want to do something like gymnastics or anything where I'd join as a beginner and everyone else would be really good and flexible and laugh at me. So yeah nothing that requires flexibility, because I think I'm a bit too old to become flexible. Any suggestions appreciated. Unless you suggest gymnastics. In which case, are you retarded?!

Thank you so much x

I'm not suggesting gymnastics but you are quite wrong in thinking you are too old to become flexible. It is more difficult as you get older but it is quite possible for adults to significantly improve their flexibility, at least in their hips and shoulders. Spinal flexibility is more fixed by skeletal limits. You are also wrong in thinking that if you started as a beginner at 14 everyone else would be really good and laugh at you. You would typically be in a class for beginner teens, although how classes are constituted varies between gyms. Most gymnastics classes offer a very supportive environment and coaches are very quick to deal with bullying and teasing because allowing that undermines the culture of respect that is vital to keep participants safe. Also there are a number of different gymnastics disciplines with different demands in terms of flexibility. Rhythmic requires most, then Women's artistic gymnastic gymnastics, tumbling doesn't require much flexibility and the same is true for bases in acrobatic gymnastics, trampolining requires hardly any flexibility.

I know you don't want to do gymnastics and, of course, you shouldn't then because it takes real commitment and effort to improve and you won't put that in to a sport you don't enjoy. However I'm still offering these correction to your misunderstandings about gymnastics because other people will read this question and some of them might be interested in gymnastics and be put off.

It is hard to say what is a fun sport because different people enjoy different things. Some things you might want to think about are: Do you want to do an individual sport or be in a pair or part of a team? Do you want to play a game format sport? Do you want a sport in which it is easy to gauge progress? Also do you actually want a organised sport or just a physical activity you can be more laid-back or flexible about?

You could consider: Netball, hockey, track events (running, hurdles), field events (high jump, long jump, pole vault, triple jump, javelin, shot put, hammer), tennis, badminton, volley-ball, soccer, cross country, swimming, martial arts including taekwondo, karate, and judo, yoga or aerobics.

Girl, you're never too old to become flexible (Unless you're, like, 90). I started taking dance last August and I thought there was no hope of gaining my flexibility again - but I now have all three splits down and am really flexible. I took Broadway jazz last fall and liked it, but if you don't want to join as a beginner, I wouldn't suggest it for you, as I'm still working my way up. I started taking a contemporary class at my studio and am loving it! I'm not sure how the classes differ across the states, but I think it would be great for you. The steps are pretty easy, the dances are fun, and you don't have to be too flexible. I've only been to 2 classes yet, and it is, by far, my favorite kind of dance!

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope this helped!

Athletics - sprinting or middle distance running, maybe field events like jumping or throwing? I love athletics, it's keeps you so fit and healthy and you really don't need to be flexible (I'm not at all)

It is a fun sport because you meet loads or people, it takes place during summer so it's warm and fun, there are loads of really hot guys ;) and it's just great! The feeling you get when you win races is the best! You are also under no pressure to do well for the team like in team sports! It's great, especially for introverts!

Well, horseback riding is like thee best sport ever! It's never to old to learn how to ride!

But other then riding, there is..

-swimming (swim team)

-rugby

-lax

-bowling team

-dance

-basketball

-roller skating (like derbys)
