The main thing that wrestling and jiu jitsu have in common are getting you comfortable with grappling on the ground, but wrestling is a very different sport than jiu jitsu, so you will have to familiarize yourself with wrestling rules. In jiu jitsu there are no pins and you get comfortable on your back. In wrestling, it's just the opposite.
Also in wrestling you have to make weight in order to compete. This can wreak havoc on your meal habits, and you will have to constantly run around in sweat suits to cut weight during the wrestling season. This is something to think about.
Yes. Definitely.
My son did both. (He started off with a bit of grappling. Then he joined the wrestling team. The next year, he started BJJ. Though they're two different sports and skills, each definitely helped with the other.)
Hope that helps.
I don't think it can hurt to have extra grappling skills. Many of today's top athletes have both Wrestling and BJJ coaches. Give it a shot, and if you find your BJJ suffering then you know otherwise. All the best.
Wrestling will help alot if your planning on doing MMA or defending yourself, but it won't help your pure BJJ. Wrestling is great if you can get top position and starting bombing ground and pound on an opponent, but in a BJJ match, wrestling positions/takedowns aren't always ideal for submitting a opponent.
Do it! If you're losing a wrestling match just submit the other guy! You'll get disqualified, but it'll be funny as hell!
IMHO it does help a lot.
i have been doing jiu-jitsu for awhile now. i have been thinking of joining the wrestling team for my last year of high school. some people say it will help, others say it wont. i know wrestling will help with my takedowns in jiu-jitsu but overall is it a good or bad idea?
