You can learn the modern version of Pankration in Greece and also in most of countries around the world...Spartan type of training is done somewhere in the Peloponnese in Greece but not in the exact way of course..Most probably is done in many other places around the world as well or something similar at list.
The Spartan initial tactic of armed combat reminds a bit the anti riot police...All anti riot police around the globe is doing a similar tactic...Rugby and American football also starts from a similar position. Pankration is a balanced mix of striking and grappling (stand-up and ground)...Pankration, Boxing and Wrestling was all around the Ancient Greek world and not only in Sparta of course. The Spartans were not allowed to compete in the Ancient Greek Olympic games in Pankration (they were allowed to compete only in safer sports) since they were too dangerous to participate in that. In addition the initial Spartan way of combat was also the whole Ancient Greek world initial type of combat...
Too funny.
I can't see much practical purpose to it. And I can't even see much entertainment purpose to it since you want to train alone.
I give you a few weeks max of doing this before you get bored and move on to something else.
Now in case you are serious to actually learn how to sword fight, how to use a shield etc. you need to do a bunch of research. Learn how the Greeks, Romans, etc used them. Learn about the different kinds of swords, and daggers. Learn how to handle them.
I have a friend who does sword fighting in the SCA and while the period is different the techniques derive from the earlier period you're interested in. So you might want to learn about that first and there are people that could help you and teach you.
Otherwise, my bet is less than two weeks for this interest for you.
Unfortunately we don’t really have a manuscript of their martial art. They kind of looked down on anything none martial like writing a book. Also no direct teaching has been passed down since that time.(I don’t think any martial art has direct lineage that extends down 2000 years) All we have to go by are archeological findings and trying to match the other Greek culture’s images(Spartans weren’t exactly artists neither) and the weapons we find.
Also I don’t think Spartan training is what you think it is. Much of Spartan tactics and techniques were teamwork based. For one person solo tactics and techniques Spartans really didn’t specialize in that and you’ll get a better training for it in other martial arts.
Greece
And yeah...good luck with that.
We're on the retarded side of the internet again... Aren't we.
Where can I learn Spartan training? With sword and shield. Are there any books? There are no classes where I live so I have to learn on my own, thank you
