It's the material of the rope that determines the speed you can "skip" it with, or whatever the proper term is. Handles don't matter. If it's too slow buy another one.
For training strength and explosiveness I wouldn't skip rope. Jumping rope is great for quickness, cardio and endurance.
I have a leather rope with weighted handles and ball bearings holding the rope.
The ball bearings allow the rope to spin faster.
The weights strengthen the wrist.
The leather ensures you will not miss a jump ;-)
Plastic is hard to control, it's hard to slow down if you start to go too fast. Leather, being heavier, makes it much easier to slow down and control it.
Nothing in jumping rope is plyometric, and so won't help with explosiveness. However, it is outstanding for building wrists, ankles, calf, development of rhythm, and cardiovascular workout. Done properly, it is easy on the knees and hips, unlike running.
Make sure you get a rope that has ball bearings in the handle for speed. The plastic ones tend to break faster. They get brittle and twist off at the handles after a while.
I've been using a leather rope with steel handles but it's too slow
I want to use it to increase my speed and become more explosive
Should i buy a wire or plastic speed rope. Or are there any specific ropes you reccomend?
