Well a con of both is that neither utilize wrestling takedowns. I guess Sambo would help since it combines judo with Russian wrestling. Anyway here is how I see it
BJJ
Pros:
Fantastic groundwork and submissions.
Great workout
Great self defense.
Cons:
Not the best takedowns/throws
Does not utilize much, or any striking
Notes:
BJJ groundwork tends to be slower, and a BJJ practitioner will study the situation and find the right time and place to choke/submit.
Judo
Pros:
Fantastic throws
Also a great workout
Does utilize some striking
Great for self defense
Cons:
Groundwork isn't as effective as BJJ
Most judo clubs only train with a gi
Several clubs will focus primarily on tournament competition, and secondarily self defense.
Notes: Judo tends to have faster and more explosive groundwork. While it isn't as good as BJJ at groundwork, It's got a killer armbar haha.
Combine both, and you would do great in competition, and on the street.
The best is either a bjj club with a judo black belt as one of the coaches or a judo club with a either a bjj black belts as one of the coaches or a couple of newazza specAilist. Judo was chosen by the Japanese police force as there main style of ju jitsu it was tested against pretty much every art including bjj and came out on top. Humans have been fighting a long time the Japanese have been studying fighting and recording it longer than anyone. Both bjj and judo are great but you will allways have to remember that no one really created anything it was all done a long time ago and judo is the best of it. Anyone one who claims that there art has something another grappling art doesn't is crazy I've seen pure judoka do all sorts of crazy subs from gaurd lots ive never seen in bjj and I've seen pure bjjers use rare but effective judo takedowns that I never see so in sort decide if you want to start learning standing up or on the ground and go from there. For self defence pure judo beats pure bjj just a tiny bit but its all relative to the idiot that said something ryu if it was the best it would be what judo and bjj are today so why isn't it?
Neither.
Neither are better or worse than the other.
To choose one would be to ignore the real possibility of a bad instructor, or an instructor who is up front that what he teaches is not complete for street.
To choose one over the other would imply that the worst student of the best style is still better than the best student of the worst style.
So, I'll mention it a million-and-one-th time... no style is better than any other - for any purpose. Only students and instructors can better or worse. Find a good school and train there. That is the only gauge you need to determine which to do.
EDIT: @KeyboardWarrior - I'd didn't vote up or down your answer. You answers prove only one point: that someone in either style can fight well on the street. But none answer the original question of which one is better. Perhaps, because you didn't really answer the question, maybe that's why the down-votes? I guess I'm a traditionalist, perhaps not - my styles aren't exactly "traditional" - but I don't behold any style above another.
nothing the best nothing better, all depend on who is someone use. doesnt style made someone be the best but discipline and focus.
Sanuces ryu is superior to both of them in both stand up and ground as well as against weapons. Bjj has nothing on Sanuces ryu when it comes to ground fighting, every technique and tactic in bj is in Sanuces ryu plus a whole lot more, including weapons fighting on the ground and weapons defense. the one thing bjj doesn't have. And Sanuces ryu has been proven against multiple opponent unlike bjj, which has no defense against multiple opponents.

But please give me pros and cons of BJJ vs Judo. Which is better for self defense.
