Same question came up yesterday. My reply & the IOC's would be: You already have boxing, judo, Wrestling, Taekwondo & fencing. That is enough combat sports.

Why not? The ancient Olympics had an event called the Pancration which was exactly the same thing as mma. The Pancration mixed boxing and wrestling and allowed the competitors to do everything except bite and gouge the eyes.

I'd be more honest. I've long felt that the Greek Olympics were just a cultural and historical prelude to the games held at the Flavian Ampitheatre...
