First time going to High School wrestling practice?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
It's going to be brutal.

Yes, brutal.

But if you want to do it, you can.

My son was a walk-on in wrestling at age 15. He'd never been on a wrestling mat before. He'd done years of traditional martial arts, but that was it.

The first year, he was junior varsity. Halfway through his sophomore year, he got promoted to varsity. (This was at one of the top 10 wrestling schools in the state.) It's not that he was overly gifted in wrestling, but he just worked hard at it.

He stayed with wrestling in high school, but also took up grappling and BJJ...and later kickboxing and MMA. In BJJ and grappling, he's beaten some state wrestling champs. And in MMA he's beaten a number of guys who competed in wrestling at States.

Point is: You'll feel like you're doing horribly the first few months. But if you're serious and stick with it, by the end of the school year you'll see real, definite progress.

The key is to stick with it.

Hope that helps.

Everybody started out at point zero. Remember that and don't be shy at all. Even guys who bench press 350 pounds started by doing 10 pushups. That's what they see when they see you working out. If you walk away, then you don't understand. If you stay, then they will respect that because they started out as nobodies and got bigger. You'll be kind of whimpy your first year, but then you will know what you're doing. If doing a pull-up is too hard, then you need to pump iron for awhile to strengthen up. Wrestlers don't want to get as big as possible, but some strength helps. Your coach may want you to bump up one or two slots if someone is graduating in a particular weight class. You can only do that by pumping iron. It will work itself out with time. A lot of those guys have been doing it for years - so tough it out at first and have fun. I guess you'll also need to go to Big 5 Sporting Goods and buy a pair of wrestling shoes. They aren't too expensive usually. Good luck.

Don't worry about it.. Just go in and try hard and people will show u respect.. You don't have to BE the BEST, but you do have to TRY your BEST.. In my high school days I remember the summer practice was just extra, and the real stuff starts when school starts.. Your still only 15, so u have plenty of time to learn, go for it, wrestling is a lot of fun

25 push ups... I guess that's why your name is Swag. Not important. I can't even do 15 2 years ago.

If you lose, don't make it such a big deal. Use it as experience and don't cry to mommy.

What can i expect. I can do max 25 pushups. Cant really do wide grips pullups. Im pretty sure i can climb the ripe but idk the technique. I live in California. Theres practice today at 6. Im 5'9 155 pounds. First time wrestler. Summer practice started like 2 months ago and im about to join now. Is it too late now. I want to make friends and stuff so thats one of the reasons. Im scared shitless. I dont want to be a loser wrestler. Im 15 sophmore never wrestled before.
