All styles of martial arts were created for self defense> Martial sports were not they were created for competition but most will work in self defense.
Less then 40% of fights go to the ground. And all martial arts have some ground fighting techniques but not all sports do.
There is no best style.
They will all work as long as you train right and have a good instructor.
Your size, body type and sex have nothing to do with the style you want to choose. People that think that your size and body type determine the style know little to nothing about martial arts
Most people will tell you there style is the best or they heard such and such is a great style,
The style is not important, what matters is how good your instructor is and how you train. The style is secondary, they all have there pro's and con's there are no superior styles.
If you have an instructor that can’t teach you how to fight, regardless of the style, what good would it do you?
Choose a school with a good instructor in the end that’s all that matters, that and how you train.
Its the person that has the ability to fight not the style
There is no best style for self defense. Anything and everything can be used in self defense. However, everything created were not created for self defense. Some were created for sports. Boxing, bjj are sports. The focus of the training is on competing instead of self defense but they can be used in some capacity in self defense. Krav maga is not a martial art. It is a self defense course.
What it narrows down to is the instructor. You need to find a good instructor that will help you reach your personal goals. Then you must have some patience to learn those things and how to apply them. Crash courses will not prepare you will enough to defend yourself if you ever need to. They only give you a false sense of security. You will not have the fine motor skills or mentality to end a real threat.
You are right that their is no best art but it sounds like you narrowed it down to boxing. The real question is how does boxing fair in self defense.
Boxing is great. The explosive energy you develop as a boxer is beyond anything I have experienced in any art and it helps me in every fight; muay thai, judo, etc.
Using your legs.
In self defense using your legs is overrated its a nice option but boxing will do fine. The thing I would miss more is elbows. But since your application is self defense, you can probably visit a muay thai gym and ask to learn knees and elbows from there you can practice at home..
Going to the ground.
Yeah boxing is pretty useless here. Fights only hit the ground if one person wants them to and you really don't want that. Try to stay on your feet. You noted BJJ thats a good art with all ground but it doesn't always translate well with its slow pace. If you can find a good Judo school I suggest that. I practice both and think Judo is better for self defense it pairs really well with boxing. Judo is faster pace and shares in the explosive energy. They also practice standing throws and ground 50/50 most classes are 2-3 hours though because of that. Anything in bjj can be found in judo the difference is that judo pacing means the most practiced techniques are the more efficient ones. Which is what you want for self defense. But if you want the technical toolbox to destroy an opponent that knows how to grapple bjj is a good choice.
If you want to go between boxing or kickboxing, both are solid choices. They are fighting sports so they train you to be a fighter and that training is what really sets them apart from other martial arts.
The one that you personally adapt to the best. The best way you can find that out is to try a little of many the one you find you adapt to the easiest is the natural choice for you personally.. Because you
'like' what you are practicing you will advance faster, As you learn further you will also scrutinize and examine other styles and in fact other of the many individual arts also should your interest remain.I personally for example began with Judo to 2nd Dan then went through Shotokan and a couple of other styles of Karate each giving me different experiences. then 4 yrs of aikido to 1st Dan then on to Nihon Ju Jitsu Im now a third Dan and with my previous experiences i gained a great ability to adapt the techniques i could do best. Nihon Ju jitsu is considered not to be a martial sport until very recent times it was forbidden to teach or learn in Japan itself. It has a great deal in common with Brazilian Ju Jitsu except Nihon Ju Jitsu has no sport form... Therefore it is considered a 'martial art' and not a 'martial sport.
Add..... Also Kung fu is not considered itself as a martial art or sport because it incorporates very many different styles as does in fact Karate also.
'
Krav Maga destroys all martial arts.
It destroys fatrate, hung fu, and fagkwondo.
"and two, when fights go to the ground... then what?"
That's exactly what people who have "somewhat trained" in other martial arts will feel like if you learn BJJ.
jeet kune do is a good pick
keep in mind there are 3 ranges to effective
street fighting namely striking ,clinch and ground
depending on your assailant you can end up in any
of these variations ,best be prepared for it
Jeet Kune Do is Bruce Lee's style and is supposed to be effective.
I'd say combining that with some basic wrestling and you should be able to handle yourself...
usain bolt style sprinting, seriously though running is the best self defence as long as your usain bolt.
OK first I'd like to state that I know there is no such thing as the BEST martial art. I just need a martial art that will work in "street fights" and on people who are some what trained, because you never know lol.
Second thing I'd like to state. I'm not looking to start fights I just want to be able to defend myself in a real situation.
Finally I considered boxing because i really respect boxers. Mainly because my Japanese language teacher (amateur boxer) told me something I never forgot. In a fight a boxer knows they cant use their legs so there punch is everything.
The only reason i'm hesitant about boxing is because, one I wont be proficient with my legs and two, when fights go to the ground... then what?
Anyway, what martial art will be able to adapt to a lot of situations. I'm really considering kick boxing but please anyone with experience i need advice!!
Other martial arts i'm looking at: BJJ, Krav-Maga, Aikido, Kung fu
