Cheerleading is a great sport and is heaps of fun and remember it isn't practice that makes perfect it's perfect practice that makes perfect. :)

Good luck. :D

There are lots of elements to cheerleading which you will want to work on to improve, but there are some key things you can focus on.

1. Your core - any sport requires you to have good core strength, and cheerleading is no exception. If you are a flyer it keeps you tight in the air, and of you are a base it helps you lift and throw better. SO get working on that core.

2. Flexibility - This is especially important for flyers so they can pull all their shapes in the air, but again everyone needs to be flexible. It will help with you jumps, kicks and dance. I would recommend working on back flexibility so you can scorp easily and this will help with tumbling too. Also the splits is always a good thing to have in your repertoire so you can whack them out whenever you want.

3. Tumbling - Gymnastics is a massive part to cheerleading, and if you want to get into the top squads you will want to have amazing tumbling. I do not know what level you are currently at, but there is really no limit to what tumbling you should try to achieve, but standard stuff is a standing backflip, standing back tuck, front handspring, backwards walkover, forwards walkover and splats/suicides.

4. Jumps - One of the best ways to guarantee your position at the front of the cheer team is to have amazing jumps. When you jump you want to try to tuck you hips under you body, almost thrust them to the front, so that your legs can get as high as possible. Your upperbody should stay vertical with your legs coming up to meet your arms and not the other way round. Watch yourself in a mirror or do your jumps in front of a friend and get them to tell you where to improve. Always make sure your arms are neat in jumps too, because you can have the best leg position but sloppy arms will let you down.

5. Spirit - This can be anything from smiling and winking at the judges to encouraging your team mates. Spirit is enthusiasm, so it is about having the right attitude. It can come through in how you dance or jump or anything. Cheer is meant to be about spreading cheer, so just keep smiling. When I come off the mats after competing my lips is stuck in a permanent smile because I have not stopped smiling and my teeth have dried out (weird fact i know)

6. Strength - Everyone needs to be strong in cheerleading, strong enough to hold your own weight, strong enough to lift someone else, strong enough to hold that stunt that little bit long and strong enough to get up and do it again if you get hurt or scared.

7. Practise - learn all the chants, practise the moves in your garden, in your room, in the car (not when you are driving) and on the train. i get weird looks on the train in the morning but I know my cheers inside out. Get a copy of the cheer music on you phone or mp3 and listen to it whenever you can, counting through everything.

8. Enjoy it - I know I have listed a lot of things here, but cheerleading is an amazing sport and is ultimately something fun. Yeah there are competitions and you have to audition to get into the squad, but remember cheering is fun. Trust me, I have had a broken nose, busted ankle and cheered just minutes after my boyfriend has split up with me and cheer always cheers me up. You make friends for life and create amazing memories.

Yes it is hard work but also great fun.

and pratice a whole lot
