I learned hand gun fighting from my dad and a couple of military experts I used to shoot with on a hand gun competition team back in the 1960's. One of the lessons I was drilled into my head is that when you draw a gun it is to use it; otherwise it is brandished for intimidation. If someone is close to you they are quite likely to take it away and club you with it than shoot you.
Most of the time when accosted with a hand gun the perpetrator is trying to get you to comply or they would have already shot you. All firearms are distance weapons. When you are in too close you are likely to be disarmed if not well practiced at shooting. I drill my advanced students on firearms fundamentals both the use and how to disarm. As to the story in the Blaze I read it quickly. I did not see if it said they were trained. Trained is great and part of being prepared; however even untrained and having the advantage of close quarters, numbers and indomitable spirit probably saved the day. Either way I congratulate them roundly!! Excessive when the perp brings a gun should be only if he wad mutilated after they broke his neck. I know I know the law doesn't see it that way and I'm not advocating that. I just would be very pumped up if someone pointed a gun at me.
Of course it is a deadly weapon and one shot could kill you. Not doing anything you may be shot anyway. It is hard to call it weather to fight or surrender. If the intent is just to take your money and flee give up your money. If as in most cases of home invasion you are likely to be killed you may want to take any opportunity to turn the tables.
We teach several disarm techniques. Some work for knife and gun some are handgun or shouldered arms specific.

For an attacker, a gun can be of an aid for intimidation...but if the potential victim is not fearful of weapons just by the sight of a weapon, and the attacker doesn't know what to do with them other than shooting, he/she can get in a much worse position that he/she could have been with out them....Someone shouldn't rely on them if she/he is that desperate to steal something...Lol!!!
Something similar can apply for the defender as well.....If someone is going to try to use a weapon, is better to know how to use them accordingly, either as an extension of his/her body (not shooting involved) either for intimidation but is still the last thing that somebody wants to do, except if the case is extreme..There are so many ways to do it, why choose a gun??
Guns are for wars...Anyone using them for shooting people in peace times, guilty or not, he/she may be facing different consequences not only from the law but from the friends and family of the person that got shot.....Only in extreme cases someone can be justified to shoot...
Tip...If anything ever happens with a gun, first check if the security of the gun of your opponent/s is on...Lol!!!

Nope, I live in Canada, and we can't carry firearms here.
I have had to deal with guys with knives and guns. The only "gun thing" that actually got physical he didn't have time to draw it.
So, experience makes me a bit leery, as some guys do bring weapons when they assault others.
It pays to pay attention.

@Sev, if you have a 9mm weapon it wouldn't be an instant kill anywhere. You'd have a medium chance of surviving once shot by a 9mm hand gun. Since 9mm guns have these kinds of bullets that makes it go through instead of staying in the human's brain or whatever. And if shot in the front of the face can be deflected (As high as 35% chance).
Its always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.....
