I think the performance this time as compared to previous Olympics tournaments before 2004 was better,since then India used to struggle for just one bronze medal.But this time there were 6 medals in total as compared to 3 last year.As for why India is not performing well overall is due to the lack of passion and internal desire to win in an individual sports(leave team sports like cricket,soccer,hockey aside) by majority of Indian athletes is not there at all.Look doing well in Olympics is more about related to individual achievements.See,to win in top level like Olympics or world championships,you should have the passion from inside,which gives you inspiration to win.See,for instance take the example of medal winners Sushil Kumar or Saina Nehwal and the other 4 athletes.Also take example of top international sportsmen like Federer,Usain bolt,Carl Lewis,Michael Phelps,Tendulkar,Shanewarne,Lionel Messi,Zidane,Shumacher,Amstrong,etc.Thes... people have that passionate interest towards there sport,which inspires them to reach the top.All theese're amongst people who do not play only for the sake of playing or participating,but rather only want to win.In the end after putting hard fought effort even if you loose,doesn't matter.The pool of such athletes here in India is very less.Those athletes who think only making or breaking national records or participating in Olympics is a big feat or some kind of big achievement,then they are only fooling themselves.
India is terribly behind in Sports except from Cricket. There are a lot of reasons about it.
1. Cricket is the most top reason for that, nobody wants to send their children to make career in other sport because only cricket will give them more money and all. So cricket comes first and other things last..
2. Government is not taking much interest in improving other sports. Most of the politicians take sport as ****. they don't care at all. (if you know few days ago some minister held a function to congratulate 2012 Olympic medal winners, that minister even didn't know those athletes name properly and he pronounced it totally wrong)
3. Our country has 1.2 billion population but 80% and more of them are poor, and they even don't know what kind of sports are there(except cricket). even if they want to make career in sports they don't have anything they can start sports. i know some people manage to get success but it happens rarely.
4. Recently i read an article in newspaper, it says in India parents don't allow their children to play outside much because they want their children to study all day and get good marks and become a big man. so Indian sports get killed before it rises. Parents don't see career in other sports and they don't want their children to spoil career.
5. we don't have much training centers and clubs in India. our hidden talent stays hidden. people who want to do something in sports don't have any support. they don't know where to go and what to do. at last they give up and lose hope. (if we manage to open some government clubs and training centers in every city and in few villages then a lot of hidden talent can rise)
In short India is LAZY !!! They don't understand importance of Olympics. If we are getting some medals its because of some private companies who supports few athletes not government.

I'd say it's likely because the nation has more things on its mind than trying to collect a ton of medals at the Olympics, and two the most popular sports in India (cricket, squash) aren't part of the Olympics at present.

We indians have a habit to hesitate and to shy except (Muslims) becoz we girls have do not have any rite to do such things.
Talking about Indians , we never want to enclose our self, who tries they show`s there capability as they can!!
That`s the reason why India never comes first in everything but nothing!!!!!
