because of the group system they knew they had an easier draw in the next round if they lost rather than won , they did the right thing but but very badly, it is the fault of the olympics if losing gets you an easier draw than winning
I see everyone mentions the 2 Chinese, but fails to mention the 4 Koreans and 2 Indonesians that were disqualified from the competition.
Of all the media it has been the Chinese media that has expressed their disgust at this unfortunate situation and the 2 Chinese players are today making a public apology.
The situation arose because of the group system that is used. The winners of the matches would have played against stronger opposition in the next round. So in a bizarre way they were playing to win.
It was quite disgusting to watch Olympians behaving like that and they totally deserve their disqualification.
@ Peter D - presenting 1 East Asian - Don`t forget the 4 Korean and 2 Indonesian women though eh?
And we are talking `Badminton` which is not Football, they are entirely different sports.
* The order that the matches were played in was decided by the organisers. I really don`t think anything would have been different if the order had been arranged in any other way.
I would have hated to have paid good money to see that travesty and Badminton is `my` sport. The Chinese, Korean and Indonesian pairs are usually very entertaining to watch.
Now we have a Japan v. Canada semi final.
Which is nice.
It is not fair for there to be a situation where both teams have an interest in losing a match, and yet there are not the rules in the game to handle this without invoking an artificial "sportsmanship" clause. Far better would be to tweak the rules.
In some card games, they have "misere". This means you try to lose as much as possible, and the winners of tricks lose the game. Because of the setup, we created two misere games. Unlike cards though, badminton played to misere under current rules is not good to watch and not good to play - it is too easy.
I agree that the rules are at fault if they enable a misere situation, or that a misere game should be made more entertaining and skillful - for example, upon declaration of misere by the umpire, all losing shots are declared winners, and vice versa: by hitting the serve into the net, the point is won, not lost.
Misere can be declared at any time by the umpire, if he or she feels that a game is being deliberately thrown, or is likely to be. It could even be agreed at the start between both teams and the umpire.
It provides a fascinating scenario in football (soccer) in that the effort then will be to score own goals, and the effort made by the opponent is to stop the team putting the ball into their own net. In misere football at kickoff, the players can position themselves anywhere in the field, not just in their own half, and the goalkeeper will be placed in their opponents' goal.
the answers got it there. they all got disqualified at the end lol
it shows the loyalty of how proud they are being chinese.
tbh i find the british very hypocritical, we see this in football/soccer especially in england, yet they get praise for it.
they did nothing wrong, if anything blame how the system works.
i'm pretty sure everyone here rather have their nation face each other in the finals (therefor gold and silver) than an earlier round. this is ridiculous, we see this in other sports, sports is a tactical game. if this ruin the olympic spirit, then cut the medals then and let's all play for fun.
lol i know robert, but it seemed the chinese started it first, i'm using football as an example. what i'm saying is at the end of the day, sports is a tactical game, both teams are already through so why are they gonna waste their energy?
u could say fans pay good money to be entertained but don't we all, not all of us can get what we want or expect in sports OR in movies as a matter of fact. in a chinese point of view, i would pay to see this because i want what's best for my country.
The rounding SYSTEM for BADMINTON isn't the greatest.
1. The winner for that match had a chance to get the Gold, but would face a hard opponent.
2. The loser for that match also had a chance to get the Gold, but would face an EASIER opponent.
So they both tried to lose.
Choice: Get the Gold the easy way, or the hard way?
They want to maximize the amount of medals they could get then to win king of the hill for prestige. So they purposely give up. They could of did it in a showy way, but instead they hit their side of net or hit complete off course on purpose or didn't try to hit a simple serve at all. They repeated so much that people could clearly see their not really playing so they were caught. So its not game fault but the players since they didn't put off an act at least.
Yes everyone who answered is correct.
I'd just like to add that their were 2 Chinese teams entered into the badminton, at one time or other they would have come up against each other, both teams wanted to play each other IN the finals hence why teams including "team china" were throwing games.
These teams were already through from the group phase into the knockout phase. . now they worked out that if they finished second in the group instead of first they would still go through but would play an easier competitor in the next round. so they tried to lose the game and finish second instead of first in the group.
They want both Gold and silver. If same nation have match with each other at first match. Only one medal is possible.
