Plus take the focus off of getting a black belt. The focus should be on learning and improving your skill. Belt mean very little. It means nothing if there are no skills to back it up.
The number of belts vary depending on the school. Some has 14 belts like yours and some has only 5-6. There are some pros and cons of having many belts. The pro is that it can help to improve your skills more. What i mean is, when you have more belts, there is more opportunity for you to learn more kicks and learn them correctly. The con is that it will cost you more money than it would with only a few belts. But i think the money is worth the time and effort if you work really hard. Also, it will be more rewarding if you spend more time as a color belt.
That is a lot of belts, but I really can't pass judgement on your school without additional context. In the end, what matters is getting good instruction.
My school has 9 solid color belts, including white and excluding black. There is also a stripe level between each solid color. The kids' program implements the stripe level pretty consistently, but I've seen kids jump a level if the instructors think they're ready for it.
In the adult program they will often keep you at white belt a little longer and then skip you to the second color belt. For both adults and kids there are mandatory stripes when you get to the higher levels.
A kid who starts at 6 or 7 is looking at about 10 years to get to black belt, so the stripes allow them to keep getting promoted and see that they're making progress. A kid who goes through all the stripe levels is looking at about 16 belts.
But at the end of that they are *really* good. The main reason for that is that we have good instruction. Are you satisfied with the quality of the black belts at your school? If yes, then the system would seem to be working. If not, then you have reason to be concerned and to maybe check out what other schools are offering.
Mcdojo alert!
Mcdonalds also has about 14 things on their menu. Wouldn't you rather go to a restaurant with 5 great orders?
Leave your dojo immediately. Paying 50 for blackbelt, maybe, especially to pay for the boards. But 50 for yellow and above should immediately be a red flag.
What confuses me is, how are there that many colors? I mean I know there's thousands of shades, but the only colors I know are: red blue yellow green orange purple brown grey black white (if you count the last three)/. 10 coolers? Purple and violet are the same thing in my opinion lol.
Jwbulldogs is right, in fact I have a suggestion for you (please do not really do this, this is extreme sarcasm) go on century martial arts and buy a black belt. Then pick a fight with a biker gang and see if it gives you magical powers!
run, that is too many
any thing more then 10 is too many,
there are 10 degrees of black belts so there should be no more then 10 levels of color belts
I have read on the web that most schools has from 10 to 12 belts to get from white to black on taekwondo. Now my school has 14 belts. Have anyone have heard from any school that do 14 belts?
Is this just done to get more money because each belt test is 50 dollars.
Please any master or instructor that have anything to say will be great im in miami.
Thanks
