Competition. It drives some people, drives others away. Also a feeling of comradery.
Another unskillful "shot" at gays - they probably don't want you because on every other post you are a female. If you don't know which sex you are imagine how confused the football coach would be.
It dates back to our ancestral age when men compete against each other to impress women. They say cavemen fight each other, and who ever wins, gets the woman. Human thinking progressed, and didn't see the need to fight, so we have implemented early sports with who can throw a rock farther, jump higher, run faster, etc. To provide basis of who is stronger/strongest. Ergo we have an innate feeling that being the strongest will more likely get us what we want instinctively - women. It is in our system, and will always be there.
Watching sports is the same, instead of us being there, we are simply entertained of watching others battling it out.
