my age is 17 years and i am skinny and my height is 179 cm.
I used to know a guy who did karate and he said that taekwondo is a knockoff of karate for kids. He said that only mcdojo will teach it and it doesn't help you defend yourself against any opponent. Learn karate instead.
@Russell...TKD is Korean Karate. I studied TKD long time ago. JiDo Kwan style. And it is identical to Shotokan with 1 difference we had more kicking. Just look at TKD it was founded off the basis of Karate. Do a little history and youll see TKD is just a off shoot it is NOT a traditional Korean system as you would think. All The TKD grandmasters learned Karate from the Japanese and made it there own
@KW I agree TKD is way to much of a sport since it became a Olympic sport (except for ITF). Same goes for Judo and BJJ you here that KW same goes for Judo and BJJ.
@Russel... in TKD they kick with every part of the foot. Even with the roundhouse kick the impact point can be the instep or balls of the foot, or even the heel and flat of the foot (if your advanced) even the shin and the toes.
@KW you talk abt being Biased here we go again. Look in the mirror if you want to see who is biased or contradict oneself.
It depends on what you want. This is NOT A TROLL, I am not trying to cause a fight I am expressing my opinion, whether or not you think its biased. I practice Kempo with emphasis on karate. In the past I have practiced taekwondo. This answer pertains to WTF taekwondo, not ITF. I rank ITF and karate the same. But here's my answer:
Taekwondo: If you want to dance around and think you are super good and in most cases in realty all your doing is buying a belt. You might be able to defend yourself against an untrained bum, but try fighting a karate blackbelt. ITS A SPORT!
Karate: If you want to be able to defend yourself. IT WAS ORIGINALLY USED ON A BATTLEFIELD AND DESIGNED TO KILL, PERFECT FOR DEFENDING YOURSELF!
Personally with all the TKD mcdojos (and I'm not saying there aren't karate ones, there are) Unless you can find a ITF school I'd recommend going with karate at a legit school.
(edit) @Dude, no they are not really similar. They are completely different arts. When you first start out you may think they are similar. But the stances are different. The striking points are different (for example, karate kicks with the shin or ball of the foot for roundhouse, while taekwondo hits with the instep knuckle). As I said, one is primarily a sport while the other is primary self defense. They both can be sports and they both can be used for self defense. But Taekwondo puts emphasis on kicks, and the true power of karate is in hand strikes. So similar, sure, but very similar? NO. Maybe they are not day and night different, but.... more like comparing men to women. Equal. Not better or worst. Just different.
Martial arts are abstract concepts. One art cannot be inherently better than another art.
There are no better arts. There are only better schools, instructors, and practitioners.
Your height and weight also do not in any way affect what martial art you should take because all martial arts are designed to adapt to anyone.
The best possible thing you could do is visit both schools and choose the one with the best instructor - that's all that matters as long as you train properly and enjoy it. Good luck
Now go forth, and choose wisely.
Don't go for easy. Martial Arts is about challenging yourself mentally and physically, among other things. Pick a style that you feel suits you. No one style is better than the other. They were all developed to serve a purpose. I think what would be most important is to find a good instructor, regardless of style. A lot of sensie's loosen things up, put their own twist on it, and incorporate their own methodology and ideology. Not saying this is all a bad thing, but sometimes they straight up don't know what they're talking about. Find one with a good strong background and lineage. My old Sensei was able to trace his lineage back to the beginning. Very traditional. If you want a little more free style go MMA.
if you have long legs so you can go for taekwondo without any problem otherwise choose karate both are a art of self defence so it will not good to judge which is batter.
Chances r u wont find a good taekwondoe school. Most are Mcdojos, i speak from experience. Make sure u research the school u happen to pick.
They are similar to each other and are based on preference. If you like karate more than taekwondo then that's what is better (in your opinion) and vice versa.
What are your goals? is it becoming olympic champion? Then TKD is better. Is it for self-defense? then it depends on the focus of the school. Is it for fitness? Then both Will do. Your goals determine which is better for you.
I'd say karate but I'm biased.
i am thinking to learn a martial arts what do you people think which will be batter and easy to learn
my age is 17 years and i am skinny and my height is 179 cm.
They're really similar, Karate has a few more punches, that's all.
