Didn't Soviet athletes repeatedly pick up more medals than the USA in the 70's/80's?
By the way, athletes win at Olympics, not nations (that is until golf is introduced at Rio 2016!).
With a potent combination of lots of patriotism and lots of sensitive pride, it will cause a massive wave of chagrin across the country, with a dip of their already low view on the rest of the world, and their only solace will be spiteful political cartoons in the papers and furious bloggers ranting online.
And if they did win the medal count - wouldn't be a big deal, as the USA has sent over 130 more athletes than China has. (but don't tell the Yanks that...actually do, they'll ignore you anyway)
If you mean whatwould happen if China wins more medals then it will signify an end of 200 years of Western dominance the rise of Asia and inevitably 3rd world status for the USA and Europe.
