What to expect at first karate lesson?

What should I expect? I'm really nervous, so how to deal with nerves? Thank you!:)

Well when I started Karate there were two teachers and one of them took me and a couple other new people aside to teach us a couple things before we got introduced to the rest of the class but then I moved not long after and changed clubs and the teacher basically introduced me to the class and told me to follow what they were doing or watch what they were doing and he was there to guide me as I tried what everyone else was doing.. Of course It's nerve wracking at first but once you've been introduced to everyone else you'll be fine. Even if you stuff up something you've just been taught you won't get called out on it because obviously you're new to it and everyone understands. It's okay, don't stress you'll be fine (:

You will usually get introduced to the facility, safety induction, escapes and all the safety stuffs.

The techniques most karate schools usually teach you first is upper rising block, outer forearm block, inner forearm block, (NOT BLOCKS, you'll find out what are they later), straight punch, and downward sweep for the basics.

They will teach a kata from the taikyoku (basics) which is just you getting to learn a bit of how to move in balance. You might learn a throw in it if you are lucky and your instructor lets in on a bit of application.

For sparring, you are usually doing 5 step or 3 step depending on the school. Utilising the blocks against attacks at a basic level. You'll find the application very later.

Edited: Please note that it depends hugely on school. Breakfalls are not standard karate techniques but may be taught for safety.

expect to meet new people, they'll be nice to you if you practice with them because you're a beginner. You can expect to do a few basics before you join the rest of the class, such as ukemi (break falls) and how to punch properly

The name game. Basic Punches and kicks like front Two Knuckle Punch, Thrust Punch, Back Two Knuckle Punch, Front (Ball)(Heel) Kick, Side Sick ,Back Kick and maybe more!

Don't worry! It's Fun!

Your instructor will throw you into a steel cage with a bunch of bloodthirsty blackbelts. LOL

Seruiously though, your basically going to do a little theory work, some basic exercises, possibly learn how to throw a proper punch & kick & that's it.

Relax...

Alot to learn. and hard to balance
