Was China always one the top countries in the olympics?

Don't know how old you are, but it was the USSR that used to top the table throughout most of the 70s and 80s. Russia is an entirely different kettle of chips: less than half the population of the USSR, and no significant state funding of athletes.

China started gearing up its effort in the 90s, and didn't really 'arrive' until 2000.

The top two of China and USA will continue to swap around, and eight or ten countries will continue to ebb and flow beneath them for the 3/4/5 spots, but I can't see the duopoly being broken unless there are major, unforeseen political cataclysms to come.

Not really, but you have to remember that China has really only been playing most of the 'western' sports for 25 years, but even now they have a relatively low participation in most sports. They obviously win table tennis and badminton - sports they invented/played for centuries. It's the same with South Korea: only 15 years ago, there wasn't a single Asian woman in the world top 100 golfers, now South Korea has 42 women in the too 100 alone. To put this in perspective, America has 7.

In the Cold war days it was USA vs the Soviets & the Eastern European nations. Only After Nixon opened up China in the 70's did they start a big sports program push.

CHINA athletes trains harder and dedicated. Unlike Unites stated who according to IOC officials are ranked no.1 in drug doping nation in the world. Half of United stated athletes have more advance training equipment than any other nations in world which gives U.S an unfair advantage. Also China does not rely on imports of nation athletes by buying them, Chinese stick only with Chinese. There are already 5 busted U.S athletes caught doping compared to one Chinese badminton throw.

CHINA OLYMPIC HISTORY

Athens China ranked no.2

Beijing China ranked no.1

London China ranked no.2

In terms of GDP Great britain, Germany, South Korea have beat United states. India has 1.2 billion population but couldn't win an gold medal, just shows population don't always have to do with everything with winning an medal. American also has 300 million talent to choose from, aswell as importing athletes from other countries, China relies on on Chinese athletes if it was multicultural it could easily beat United Stateds. American team also has highest number of athletes participating than any nation.

No, they weren't, but they copied Russia's methodology of churning out athletes, factory style (from the womb practically), and then realized the benefits of torture and depriving them of having a real life. Then, they inject them with a mind-numbing array of illicit compounds in the hopes of achieving the results that will help the Chinese to compensate for their mass inferiority complex. It works, as you have seen, but the athletes health and ability to function as a sane individual in society is severely compromised, especially if they lose, lol. Also, billions upon billions are poured into this medal-seeking money pit. Make of it what you will. (Trying to prove something, much?)

No. It was only when they came up with the genius undetectable drug and making torture commonplace when they started to win.

But God is better then the devil. Good always triumphs over evil.

Huge amounts of pressure when they are young heavy investment in sport and representing your county oh and also 1.3 billion people to choose from helps!

As a child I don't particularly remember them winning so many. Funny how I remember Russia winning much more but I guess that was when it was the ussr. America always did well. Will the top countries continue to change to which ever country is doing well financially at that time
