Starting gymnastics at age 14? (female)?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
I'll be turning 14 in less than a month and I want to start doing gymnastics. For fun, mainly, since I know I'm too old to be super fantastic, and if I ever try to compete I don't think I'll go further than state-wide. It's always appealed to me, and I've no other sports/hobbies (literally none) going on at the moment, and I'm slowly rotting away from boredom/having nothing to do. Does anyone have any advice on how to start? If I recall correctly, it's better to be on the shorter side, and I'm 5'3, so is that too tall? Thanks in advance for any answers.

It is better to be small but really height and body type are far from the most important thing. Attitude, effort, strength, balance, flexibility, coordination and how much time you put in are all more important. The higher you go the tighter the margins so that's where things like height start to matter more. At the top level everything matters. But for you starting as a beginner at age 14 you are unlikely to ever reach a level where height is a major consideration.

What I hope you notice is that the other aspects on the list are all things you have some control over and that's where you can make your gains. You need to be prepared to work hard and put time in, not just on the fun stuff practising skills, but also on drills and conditioning. You can spend time on conditioning exercises to improve your strength and flexibility outside of class because you don't need specialist equipment. and that will make the time you spend working on skills in class more effective.

5'3 is not to tall I believe that is how tall Mckayla Maroney is. To start i would find a club near you that has lessons for older beginners so you are with people in your age group. To find a club you can go to the USAG website and look up your city. Hope this helps.

Startin late girlfriend. Better get on it this week. Don't wait.

I saw girls start at 10 at our school and that was late.

And no offense but your years away from states, if ever. It's far from an automatic, you have to kill it to get there.

It's never too late. As long as you're having fun, that's all that matters. And who knows, you could be gifted. All I'm saying is no, it's not too late. If you are enjoying yourself - who cares?
