How fast were Olympic mile runners as teens?

No Olympians or world record holders were world elite when they were young.

Everyone starts out and gets better.

Your times are okay for your age and you can expect to improve.

Whether or not you can run close to 4:00 in high school is unknown.

Elite high school runners can run under 4:10 and a few have run under 4:00.

It is also normal to develop and improve in college and after college.

So what you can do now is not an indication of what you can do in the future.

I was good friends with the 2-time Virginia high school 3200m champ; his best time was 9:16. He told me that he didn't break a 5:00 mile until his first timed mile in high school (9th grade). Oddly, he never ran above 5:00 in any timed mile thereafter.

Besides hard and consistent training, a growth spurt between 8th & 9th grades really helped. By the time he left high school, he was 6' 3" and weighed about 150 lbs.

I think 5:27 at age 13 is a great time. You should be proud of your racing ability and hard work. That said, you shouldn't be satisfied, either. You're probably the fastest kid in your age, but are you faster than kids two years older? The more you challenge yourself, the better your drive will be. That drive is what makes greatness.

And a growth spurt wouldn't hurt, either.

Best of luck.

It depends on how far back you are talking about. Most probably ran a mile in less than 5 minutes at 13. We don't keep many reconds for runners that age. For High School, times in the low 4's are excellent. For your age your time is not bad, but you need to get below 5 minutes to do much in high school.

Depends. Some can run fast than most people.

I am a thirteen year old boy and I do track and cross country. I was wondering how fast Olympic runners were at thirteen, i run a 5:27 mile is this good I know I will never be in the Olympics but just thought I'd ask
