While I am no pro dart thrower by any stretch, I would like to think I am better than the average bar patron. I have no intention of ever going pro, or even looking for tournaments outside of the possible local bar scene, so no need to worry about official regulations either.
Think I should stick to plastic? or do you think it would be better to go steel? While I love the feel of steel tips and true dart boards (Just got back from a trip to Ireland and had some awesome boards over there!), I can't say I have seen too many non-plastic/electronic dart boards in the states. Only ones I have seen have been personal boards at homes or country clubs, etc.
Don't need to tell me the differences between them or what size/grip/shaft/etc to get, because I can do that research myself, just trying to figure if I should go down the path of plastic tips or steel tips. If I get steel, will I only be able to play at my house? If I get plastic, will playing on a steel board down the road be harder to adapt?
We mostly use the steel tip here in Canada. All of the pubs I've played at use real boards for steel tip. I've played down in the US with plastic and it didn't take me long to get use to them. I'm sure if you use the same weight darts in plastic or steel you won't have a problem converting to either.
Definitely go with steel darts and a real board. They are much nicer, looking and quality wise over plastic. Including a nice board. Steel darts and a board will probably cost more but it will be much nicer looking than plastic darts.
