My friend is going to be competing as an athlete in these Olympics... security for the athletes, at least, is incredible. Not to mention, she has been competing in way more dangerous countries for years. When she was twelve, she was sent to Serbia by herself with her team. Security for the athletes is top notch, guaranteed.

For spectators... I can't help you there.

How much do you trust those ratings? Suppose you were a long-time Baltimore resident and never had an incident. (I know Baltimore pretty well and know people like this.) If this list were released, would you suddenly move out, fleeing for the safety of the 53rd most dangerous city?

There are large subjective elements in those kinds of lists. If they've done their homework, there's some statistics included, but how do they frame those numbers relative to their proper context? Can anyone vouch for the Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice? I've never heard of them. Do they do anything other than produce rankings? If they do little else, they have a powerful motivation for self-aggrandizement. So let's not get carried away.

I'm not going to enter a treatise on criminal patterns. After doing your due diligence, you'll know that a cooling economy tends to breed more crime. In this case, that happens to coincide with the World Cup and possibly the Olympics.

Oh, and none of those cities were in the running to host the 2016 Olympics. St. Louis hasn't hosted the Olympics in over 100 years.

The military has begun to clear out the slums and attack the gangs that run them.

Hopefully by the Olympics things will be better.

In my travel experiences if you stay at the major tourist places, and don't venture out alone you will be fine. You can not wander into bad areas in any major city in the world.

I plan on attending the Olympics in Rio, and expect to enjoy myself as I have at all the Games I have had the opportunity to attend. I am not worried about gangs and crimes.

just wanted to tell you that Rio isn't more dangerous than most of the other big cities in the world.
