Is it too late to learn gymnastics?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
I am already 13 and I am interested in learning gymnastics.. but I'm afraid I'll be the oldest in the gymnastic class (because people usually start from young)... do u think I should join? Any tips for me please?

I think you should join. Many gyms group their classes partly by age as well as ability and others run mixed classes (depending on how many gymnasts they have and their resources) so you probably won't be the oldest in the class. Even if you are you will probably be looked up to as a "big sister" figure by the younger gymnasts, not made fun of, and you will probably move up to a class with older girls quite quickly. You aren't going to end up as an Olympic gymnast but you can still learn loads and get pretty good.

Gymnastics is a challenging sport. Very little comes easily, you usually have to be prepared to work for improvement but at the same time if you do work at it you can almost always improve (and a beginner gymnast absolutely always can.) So while natural aptitude plays its part the biggest factor in how far you can go is really how much time and effort you put in. More competitive and higher level gymnasts do have to invest themselves very heavily. That isn't something everyone wants to do so some people choose to do recreational gymnastics and progress more slowly. Either option can be a good one, it just depends what the individual gymnast wants to get out of the sport.

My top tip would be to put some time in on conditioning to improve strength and flexibility outside of class. That is far more valuable than trying to practise skills you are learning or self-teach at home. It is much easier to learn skills when you already have the strength and flexibility to do them, so that you can just be focused on learning the technique when you are doing skill development. If you try to do skills at home you might injure yourself and often end up just learning how to do the skill badly, both of which are going to slow down learning it well.

You may be put in a younger class at first (depending on the gym you are going to) but you will also learn a lot faster than the younger girls. You do have chances of competing too! Good luck! Don't be scared!

I started when I was 14...and now I'm 16 and a level 7!!!! Never too late to start

Yes, you do not want to miss out on it.

Also, just try it out ,if you do not like it then do not do it. If you are the oldest one there, then that means no one knows you and can not make fun of you.

Hope this helps!

Never too late to start anything! Do it!

If you want to do it, fine, as long as you don't expect to compete. Do it for your own enjoyment.

Thank you everyone for answering my question!!! (all your answers r the best!!) :) I will try to do my best.. wish me luck!! Lol
