Chess is not a sport. The game is fun, and challenging, and it takes a genius to be great at it - but by definition it is not a sport.
Definition: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
Chess fits a good portion of the definition, but it involves no physical exertion. So it can not be considered a sport
No way. To my mind, "sport" implies physical exertion of some kind.
Chess is a game. An ancient game, and a very mentally challenging game. It is believed to have been invented in India, possibly as much as 1800 years ago, by an unknown inventor... and no-one since that time has ever created a game so subtle and complex and wonderful.
Only if there is some sort of physical exertion involved.
So unless you are using 50 pound chess pieces, or are being forced to run 100 yards between moves, or get to punch your opponent when you capture a piece, then no, it is NOT a sport.
It is a GAME.
Chess has been argued in this manner for centuries and those educated know chess by difinition is in fact SPORT. While it may not be widely considered a physical activity, it is fun and pleasurable to those who enjoy it, so the correct and true answer is...YES
a prerequisite for a good sportsman = physical stamina
a prerequisite for a good chess player = good memory
never the same!
No. Strategy exercise. A game.
Knights storming castles, bishops chasing queens and kings, pawns playing cat & mouse, etc...it's exhausting just thinking about it.
Mentally challenging.
No..mind game..
