If you want to try it there is no harm done! Depending on what type of sports person you are, (work out all the time and willing to eat healthy, or it is something I enjoy so I will do it as a hobby) I kind of have two different answers. If you are looking to be on a college team or go to many competitions I would say the time is running out. That doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't but for most people, having years of practice is what conditions your body. You can't become as strong or flexible in one summer as an opponent who has been playing since she was three. This doesn't mean it isn't possible though, some things may just come naturally. Now if you are looking at it for a hobby, I say go for it. There is no reason you shouldn't.
Either way, I say go for it absolutely! You should never let someone else's opinion hold you back from a dream. I believe you can do it.

You are never too old and because gymnastics is an individual sport you can do it at all different levels and coaches can suggest adaptations to make things more suitable to your ability or to avoid spotting if you are too heavy. For example you could do a plank with your feet against the wall and gradually walk your feet higher if you can't support your weight in handstand. It is a great sport which is lots of fun and there is always something to learn, whether it is a simple thing like a forwards roll or a multiple twisting somersault. It rarely comes essy though, you have to be prepared to work hard and spend time on conditioning exercises to improve your strength, flexibility and general fitness. That is something you could start straight away. Things like skipping, push-ups, sit-ups, V-sits, dish and arch, leg-lifts, burpees, tuck jumps, squat jumps and lunges.
try out for your school's gymnastic team if they have one, or take classes at a local gymnastics school. good healthy workout at any age. maybe you can make it onto a college team
With hard work and dedication it doesnt matter how old you are. You can do whatever you want too with enough effort. Dont listen to people who put you down. Do what YOU want to do and forget what they say!
