cheerleading flying tips?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
his is my first year cheering in 5 years and I cheer for me school. we've practiced stunting last practice and I'm a flyer. it's between me and this other girl on who will be the third main flyer. any tips to help? I'm the shortest on the team and second smallest

You should practise flexing so you look like you have been cheering for a long time and also try to hit ever stunt

Hey there!! I'm an experienced flyer, so I can offer you some tips on how to practice both alone and with your team mates

Get a pile of books (thick novels) and arrange them in two piles, both with the biggest to smallest. The stacks should come up to at least your knee. Stand near a wall to get your balance to start with and step on to the pile, holding on to the wall. See, when you're in the air, you need to do your part by staying firm, tight, squeezing all your muscles and finding your center of balance. If you do all these things correctly, you'll be able to easily stand on the pile of books without it rocking or falling over. It will take a few tries, but once you can step on and off the books without making them tip you'll have already built up your coordination skills.

When you start actually stunting, there are some massive things to remember. The first thing is DON'T LOOK DOWN! Look up, smile big, even if you're terrified. Trust me, stunts don't look as high as they are, and once you get up there, it's petrifying to start with, but cheerleaders are champions. It can be tempting to hunch a little or lean forward, or let your body go loose, as these things help make it seem like it's not so high. DO NOT HUNCH OR LEAN FORWARD. You need to squeeze all your muscles, keep your body tight and firm and straight. Straight back, head up, like a piece of string is attached to the center of your skull and is pulling you up. Remember, though it may be slightly scarier, it's safer this way, it looks better, and it'll all be over in just a few counts, so enjoy it!

Also, I would stretch your back, legs and shoulders as often as possible. Flexibility is a key part of flying, once you get better at it.

START SMALL is another huge tip. Every cheerleader wants to go straight to a basket toss triple backflip land on one foot and do the splits in the air (none of that made any sense but you get my point) but you need to slowly build up to that. If you can do a half that's great, from there I would work on building your confidence in a full. Remember to keep your body firm and tight when going up into a full or else you will more than likely fall. A hitch is another good one (where you stay in a half, but one base lifts one of your feet up into a full so its like a stair climbing freeze frame) and then of course a liberty once your balance is good enough to go on one foot. Eventually you'll work your way up to the big stuff, but remember the best cheerleaders take it one step at a time.

I hope I helped a little bit :) Feel free to ask me anymore questions regarding flying

Start stretching and becoming flexible. Practice on your balance and always look forward when you fly. Stay tight and locked out

Cheerleaders can fly? I wanna be a cheerleader!
