1. Cricket is the most top reason for that, nobody wants to send their children to make career in other sport because only cricket will give them more money and all. So cricket comes first and other things last..
2. Government is not taking much interest in improving other sports. Most of the politicians take sport as ****. they don't care at all. (if you know few days ago some minister held a function to congratulate 2012 Olympic medal winners, that minister even didn't know those athletes name properly and he pronounced it totally wrong)
3. Our country has 1.2 billion population but 80% and more of them are poor, and they even don't know what kind of sports are there(except cricket). even if they want to make career in sports they don't have anything they can start sports. i know some people manage to get success but it happens rarely.
4. Recently i read an article in newspaper, it says in India parents don't allow their children to play outside much because they want their children to study all day and get good marks and become a big man. so Indian sports get killed before it rises. Parents don't see career in other sports and they don't want their children to spoil career.
5. we don't have much training centers and clubs in India. our hidden talent stays hidden. people who want to do something in sports don't have any support. they don't know where to go and what to do. at last they give up and lose hope. (if we manage to open some government clubs and training centers in every city and in few villages then a lot of hidden talent can rise)
In short India is LAZY !!! They don't understand importance of Olympics. If we are getting some medals its because of some private companies who supports few athletes not government.
You do not understand how a career is chosen: it is not based on what you are good at, it is what job society deems for you. Their caste system prevents people from joining organizations and opportunities to excel in anything. For example, you can be the tallest person India: but if you are part of the Untouchable caste, forget about ever being allowed to represent India.
Second, India is massively divided: outsiders that look on India think all of their ethnicities are Indian. In fact, their are over 30 different groups that all hate one another. If it were not for British Rule, they would remain 3 separate factions.
Next, India has the number 2 most corrupt government in the world. It is estimated that 42% of their tax funding is stolen from federal and state use. THat is huge! No one funds the training or coaching of their teams. Whereas besides cricket players, the salaries of athletes are low. As a result, parents discourage their kids from even considering a career in athletics with no hopes for a long term career. Ex: Sushil Kumar who won a silver and bronze medal in wrestling for India has been working as a electronics assistant. I make 8 dollars and hour and still make more than he does.
Because they don't have African athletes. Athletes of African descent win most of the medals for USA and Britain. If China had the same number and quality of black athletes it would have won despite the apparent corruption and bias within the IOC and its judges.
Because there are more important things in life for Indians. Like getting a job and looking after your family.
well.. india sucks balls at sports. im indian and i was born in america.. im not proud to be part indian.
i am really good at sports because i like doing it. i even hold a few records in my school. the rest of the indians didnt even pass
Two words: caste system.
Very often someone from upper caste would be chosen to represent India even though someone from lower castes might be a better athlete. And the members of lower castes cannot even buy food let alone have time to play sports.
You don't need to worry son and mind your own business. We can cover up for the losses in next 20 years.
Why don't you piss off ,you motherfuckin' *******.How many cricket world cups or hockey gold medals has your country won?
Dont worry atleast be glad they won trophys not like my country they just go to loose EL SALVADOR :'( but im glad they atleast get to go :-D
cuase of bad performance in Athelatics
Aren't they ashamed of how pitiful they do at every single olympics? US Swimmer Michael phelps has won 23 medals over THREE olympics while every indian team in every olympics since 1920 has won 26 medals. Look at Athens, US 100 medals, China 63medals, Russia 92 medals and India....1 medal, getting beaten consistently by alot of countries that have a far smaller population than them and a far smaller talent base.
A country of 1.2 billion........over every summer olympics since 1920 has been put to shame by one athlete from one country over three summer olympic games.
I know alot of the blame put on the Govt and corruption/financial problems etc... But African nations are far more poverty stricken than India and undoubtedly some are ridiculously corrupt and poor but they constitently rack up a decent amount medals at every olympics. And I don't believe that Indians can blame their genetics either...many south east asians and the chinese especially are generally of smaller stature and strength yet they manage to excel in some athletic events such as Swimming, long distance walking.
So the blame cannot be put on genetics(natural athletic ability) and cannot be entirely put on the Government so that leaves just the people themselves as a cause for India's performance (or lack of) at the summer olympics. What is everyone there persuaded that Cricket is the only sport in the world? Most of India is poor, a sporting career with a chance to win and get some glory and fame seems like a perfect opportunity to escape a life of poverty.
Their athletes sucks
Agree.....Really Strange......
