Because the 100metre race is one of the races/events everyone can watch, follow, understand, knows about, its a universial thing. The one event that happens every single olympics.
We all know Phelps swims but unless your quite into in, you might not know what event/s he does etc.
At the end of the 100m we know who the fastest man in the world is too.
Bolt is charismatic.
Phelps is just ruthlessly efficient... he's not as interesting a personality.
Even people who don't follow Athletics watch Bolt.
He is the Elvis of Sport.
You have him and then you have everybody else.
He is in a league of his own.
Also, most people never swim, but because we are land animals, running is something that everyone can identify with.
The 100m is the most basic sport there is... no equipment, no tactics... the most raw expression of physical aptitude there is.
As an American, I am saying.....I am tired of seeing Phelps being interviewed! I know he did what no other person in Olympics history has done. But, for crying out loud! He is not the only athlete there! I dont watch it just to see all the Americans. This is a world event, and I want to see other athletes from all over. Enough already!
The title, "The fastest man alive" is easily the most famous title in the entire Olympics
Running is as universal as it gets. Everyone can run. 90% of the world's population have probably never even seen a swimming pool.

plus you have to remember not everyone's american i was cheering on GB in swimming plus phelps's sport allows him to get more medals in one Olympics so it's unfair to say our top cyclist who can only compete in two events even though they could get a medal in many
either way the fastest recorded man on earth is pretty cool

SPRINT IS WAY MORE EXCITING THAN ANY SWIMMING EVENT. PERIOD.
