Learning a fight style @ home?

No, it's not reasonably (operational word there) possible to learn fighting stly strictly from a book, video, website, etc., any more than you could learn brain surgery or flying a plane that way. There is no one there to correct you if you are making mistakes or to ask questions of if you don't understand something.

In the end, trying to learn from a book/website/video is like masturbating while looking at porn - no matter how you try to justify it, in the end, you're still only screwing yourself.

People always say learning 'something is better than nothing.' I am sorry to disagree. I personally believe that in this world, there are a variety of situations. The attacks you face have different selective pressures which requires to only respond in a specific way. A selective response that does not fit into the pressure finely like a functional key gets you killed. No jokes. In a real life/death situation, a mistake gets you maimed or psychologically damaged for life.

This is especially true when people lure and trick themselves into this something better mindset. They believe they can take on all sorts of pressures without really looking at everything. Unlike my past answers, I'll be a bit more honest. It's not impossible to defend yourself without going to a dojo. Nothing's impossible. However, it's only possible if you actually learn it properly, which is already hard with no one else. Plus, you've got to respond to the right attack.

The chances of you learning it correctly and whoever attacks you attacking you in that way you trained yourself...it's too slim. Plus there's psychological barriers so that if you have never got into stress before, you'll probably not respond in time.

Learning the toolbox of response comes only from proper training. Serious training you might even not get in average sports schools. It's not that I'm disagreeing or trying to sell you into a school. I am just warning that sometimes, having the wrong thing matters.

There are many subtleties in martial training that can not be self-taught. Without some live quality instruction your skill level will always have some flaws and limitations because it is hardest to be objective about our own performance. Now. with that being said,...

There are some quality training DVDs available for REFERENCE knowledge and SUPPLEMENTAL training outside a school environment. They are available in a variety of systems, but I can not vouch for all of them as I do not possess them all. Many of these dvd sets are available through Amazon and can cost anywhere from $99 to more than $200 dollars depending on source. As I mentioned before it is designed as a supplemental training tool, NOT a substitute for live training. If you choose to use video or on-line sources you MUST pay TOTAL attention to the detail description of the execution of each technique. This will give you an informed base of information to start with, but without live instruction and someone to practice with you will only develop a minimal level of practical application skill. The phrase I like to use to describe that level of skill is... "Enough knowledge to get yourself hurt.". That is not a joke, it is a caution against unrealistic expectation of that type of training.

Most people here will tell you it's not possible. For the most part they are narrow minded bafoons. While it's certainly not the best way, it can be useful.

It really depends the quality of the instructor and how good of a student you are. The hardest part is correct your mistakes that you might not even realize your making. That and you might not be qualified to determine what good instruction is.

At some point it's always best to have someone to train with.

Martial arts uses extreme precision to maximize speed, power, and targeting. Videos and books make great supplements to live training, under qualified instruction, but are not suited to replace it. Even after 19 years training, I rely on my instructor to constantly correct the little flaws in my technique that limit performance. There just is no way to self train effectively. In fact, self training will set you back by ingraining poor techniques, which you will have to unlearn, before you can learn the correct way.

You cannot learn a fighting style on your own. No books, videos, or online self-teaching methods are any good at all. Anyone who tells you that you can learn to fight without an instructor is scamming you. Find a school with a good instructor: there is no other way.
