Is cheerleading a sport?

Personally, I don't think it is. It's literally hand clapping, yelling, and dancing..

Many people argue saying it is a sport because not many people can do the jumps and flips.. That basically says engineering is a sport because not many people can do the equations. Just because not many people can do what they can do doesn't make it a sport.

They also argue they have to learn a routine and have that memorized perfect, which is why their activity should be considered a sport. Musicians have pieces of music that they have to memorize and perfect, but no one says playing the violin is sport!

Practice is a big one for them too. Just because they practice for hours a day makes them participate in a sport.. Artists practice their skills for hours daily, not a sport. Again, musicians practice for hours on end, still not a sport.

Lastly, they say you have to be in physical shape to do cheerleading. I have seen some pretty obese cheerleaders on my school team..they aren't in shape at all. Also, whenever the cheerleaders have to run a mile for their tryout, every single one of them runs for 50 meters and walks the remaining 1559 meters.

I could also say that if they are in shape, many other people have to be in shape to get by in life. Police officers have to stay in shape, but catching criminals isn't a sport. Construction workers need to stay in shape because they carry heavy loads, but laying bricks isn't a sport. Surprisingly, parents also need to be in shape to carry their 60 pound kid when they get tired and control those raving temper tantrums.

Since when does yelling "go team! Well kick your ***", clapping hands, and picking people up count as a sport?

Your team doesn't seem as committed or try at all.Even my middle school cheer team goes to competion! Gymnastic counts as a sport right? Well some of the girls do flips and tumbling! I'm pretty sure no average girl can just pull off a scropian or be lifted in the air as a flyer and do some pretty complicated crap.I take cheer and that's how I stay in shape! I'm pretty sure you cant do a round off back handspring or some jump combinations? If you think cheer leading isn't a sport how come we have worlds? Just for us cheerleaders? I'm sorry but your going to get sassed. Big Time.My friends 250 lbs mom can do round offs and cartwheels? You don't literally have to stay in shape to do everything.

I'm sorry but do artists practice some thing physically like tumbling or lifting a 100 lbs girl in the air? No they don't.They create beautiful things mentally and with talent. We can do things called stunts, and im pretty sure you cant lift a girl in the air or be the girl in the air without some basic knowledge about stunting.

If you have some pretty obese girls on your high school cheer team than your high school team must really suck.I mean some people that are 250 pounds can do cart wheels and round offs, they aren't completely immobile and useless. If all they do and walk the mile than nobody is trying.Like they don't even want to be there.I'm a violinist and just saying I could really care less about not having music as a sport,my orchestra teacher is overweight and she's not fit at all.Again bringing up the topic about you saying that most people with jobs have to be fit.Not all teachers are,or musicians. Unless you are a muscian (i.e, violinist) you have no idea what we are doing.Yes, we have to use both mentally and physically, but most of us sit in a chair. That's really not something physical.

Also back in the day being a cheerleader was with popularity too. Some schools didnt have tryouts, they had you sign up and other students would pick the people they wanted on a team. Now,its totally different. We have to be physically capable of doing most things an average human can't do (i.e, tumbling). We have actually a thing called 3 hour practices, and long tryouts too.

So please don't underestimate something you haven't even been apart of.

Growing up, I did not think of it as a sport, but then overtime I changed my mind. Cheerleading requires practice, skill, and energy-especially for the flips and cartwheels and balance. Not everyone can do that. In addition, there are competitions and trophies and the Olympics where you can use your gymnist skills learned from Cheerleading to compete. Dancing is also considered a sport in some countries.

Popular Sports with less activity and than Cheerleading:

Golf-They swing the club 18 times every 15-20 minutes for each game.

Baseball-They swing the baseball bat, throw the ball, and run for the bases during the 30 out of 240 minutes the game is playing. The rest of the time is "time-out" or the players getting read to pitch.

My opinion is that it is a performing art. This is why, in the activities that no one argues about whether or not it is a sport, the scoring system is black and white. For example, in soccer if the ball crosses the line it is a goal, and whoever scores the most goals wins, so there is no arguing on who actually won. In things like cheerleading, 5 people could watch a competition, each pick a different winner and all have a valid argument as to why their squad was the best. To me that sounds more like art where people differ on what is the greatest painting or piece of music.

yes cheerleading is a sport you have to be flexible like a gymnast. Not all cheerleaders are skinny some are fat and your school has a really bad cheerleading team in my opinion it seems none of them are committed to cheer.
