I was 14 and was playing badminton after the gym and a man on the court next to mine was an ex coach and said to me I should consider joining a club as I was really good. Is this a nerdy/g#y sport?

Badminton is not considered nerdy or g#y. If it is something you are good at, you should go for it. There so many male badminton athletes. Badminton requires a lot of skill to play, it doesn't matter what others say.
