1. you need to be as good as possible at hitting (that's what scores runs to win games)
2. know how to throw and have a decent arm at least
3. know the rules of softball
4. know where the bases are and what the positions are!
and to play you need...
1. batting gloves (optional)
they help relieve blisters
2. bat. a good length is if you put it vertically on the ground it should be hip level. and you should be able to hold it up horizontally for at least 25 seconds.
3. LEATHER glove (Wilson is best brand)
4. batting helmet (cage or no cage)
5. facemask/mouth guard (optional)
6. softball pants (pull them up just under your knee caps)
7. softball socks (knee high)
8. sliding shorts (if you know how to slide)
9. plastic/molded/metal cleats (depending on school rules)
10. sports bras

work hard and practice, practice, practice. Have someone hit pop ups and grounders to you and play catch!!! This is the only way! I coached my daughter's tournament team, she was a pitcher and practiced almost everyday from Thanksgiving until the season started in March!! Good luck.
I would say to practice,practice, practice. You need to condition. So you need to be running laps to get into shape. And practice pitching, batting, and running.
