Please understand the gymnastics scoring system before you answer the question. Scores are given by a panel of judges, taking into account the degree of difficulty (D) and the quality of the execution (E). Komova had a higher execution score (9.1) than Douglas (8.933) on the floor exercise. However, Komova's difficulty score (6.0) was lower than Douglas' (6.1). A higher difficulty score gives the gymnast an advantage by having a higher start value for that apparatus; nonetheless, if she is unable to perform the intricacies of the difficult routine, she will then be penalized with a lower execution score. The link below has the break down of each of the 4 apparatuses by gymnast, D score and E score.
That is why the Amanar vault is so important in women's gymnastics. It has a D value of 6.5 while most other gymnasts performed vaults with a D value of 5.8. You are already ahead of the other gymnasts by 0.7 points! This is evident in the Team Finals when Team USA performed 3 Amanar vaults. That's one reason how Team USA won by a huge margin.
No risk, no glory! CONGRATS GABBY!!! Job well done!
Hell no, Gabby shouldn't have won gold. Forget that personality and nonstop smile. This isn't a personality contest. She should be ashamed and should give that gold to the true champion. 2012 All Around Champion Viktoria Komova. It's not Gabbys fault but she is a paper champion and should stop smiling.
Gabby not that Memorable? Whatever moron would say that?
She has the biggest personality, most contagious smile of them all. To me, she stands out from ALL the other girls. Not only for the tone of her skin.
And Komova did better overal? Only if you have no expertise in gymnastics whatsoever. Komova messed up her vault, she stepped out SEVERAL TIMES. Gabby Douglas DID NOT step out on the floor, she was just within the lines actually. If she was out of the lines, a flag would have been raised on the side. Victoria did a great floor routine, but there were definitely some flaws there (one landing slighty to low shouldered for example). Of course Gaby's routine wasn't all perfect either, that's why she recieved 15.033.
It's ridiculous to say 'Gabby should have gotton more deductions' unless you are a professional judge with expertise, I think. At the end of the day, Gabby won. Basically because of her strong vault, because that was the one rotation that made the difference. I think she deserved it.
Overall, yes she should have won. It seems like you're only judging Gabby based on her final performance. Viktoria did score higher than Gabby on the final performance, but overall she did not. Did you see Viktoria when she did the vault? She did the worst. She jumped off the damn mat. She took like 3 steps.
i will admit that on the floor Komova's performance was better,
but this was an all around competition, and overall gabby deserved to win.
She was consistent in every aspect, unlike Komova who stepped off in the vault.
Gabby won the gold, so just accept it.
I agree that Gabby isn't that memorable(sorry Gabby fans!) I like watching Aly and Jordan better, and Mckayla on vault. And yesterday was my first time watching the Russians and I was impressed with both of them.
But I don't think Viktoria should've gotten the gold. Even if Gabby got a deduction on floor for stepping out would she of gotten 2nd place? Gabby was consistent all night.
In my opinion, I think she should of won gold. Gabby did wonderful on her performance.
@ this point it does NOT matter b/c she WON ready so YES I'm happy 4 her =] #teamGabby
I personally dont because Viktoria Komova did better overall. Yes, she stepped out of vault but everything else was pretty much spot on and on floor Gabby Douglas stepped out. She denied it but you can see her foot out of bounds. Viktoria's score should have been high enough to pass Gabby, but they didn't count Gabby for all the deductions she deserved. I don't think Gabby is even that memorable, but I do think she should have gotten silver and Viktoria the gold. What do you think?
