Now I can't land it and the coaches tell me I need to jump but I won't jump and I get to scared
It's also affecting my other tumbling skills
If you could help me by saying how to get over the mental block in under a few weeks that would help so much
Try outs for cheer are soon and If I want to be on a good team I need my back handspring back
Thanks :)
I think often the best thing is to go back to the beginning and build up to the move through all the drills and progressions you would do if learning from scratch. That gives you an opportunity to build you confidence gradually and also to correct any mistakes so that you will be safe enough doing the move to feel safe doing the move. I particularly favour this where there has been a fall or something else that would indicate that there is some technical issue and the fear may not be entirely misplaced.
Another thing that can be effective for some people and is quicker if it works is an audible cue. This means you do the skill with a spot or in whatever circumstance you feel comfortable to do it such as on a tumble track and your coach shouts a command to cue the move. It could be "go" or "now" or for a flic "back." Once you are used to associating that command with the skill then hopefully when your coach calls the same command and you don't have a spot you will just respond without time for over-thinking, bypassing conscious thought.
Another quick option, but again one that is only going to work if the skill is actually good, is to have someone spot you and then stop spotting you without warning. So you agree with your coach that you are going to work on flics and they will spot you at first but you don't know how many they are going to spot.
i have the exact same problem that i just got over a few days ago... i know it doesn't help when people say "just don't think about it" that makes it worse. i started taking private lessons and found that helped so so much! now ill throw a back handspring anywhere! if you can't get a private lesson just find a spot. have that spotter each time take their hand away a little bit every time or put their hand out later every single time. if you don't have a spot either then you can just find an old mattress and practice them on that.. i hope this helped!
The best way to overcome this fear is to understand that if you're careful there really is no danger. If you put your arms up and bend your elbow at a 90 degree angle your forearms will be above your head. Worst case is you land on those. Practice into a foam pit to regain your technique and you'll be fine
Try to remember that of u do it right then u wint fall remember why u love the sport and do it in pool
