The opening ceremony was held in the Olympic Stadium in East London. This is located in the purpose-built Olympic Park, which is home to:

Obviously quite a few events are taking place within the park, but not all of them! For example, beachball has been going on in the historic surrounds of Horse Guards Parade, smack in the middle of London between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. Others – like rowing and sailing – are outside the capital.
