I'll just answer the first one... the purpose was to set aside differences and to compete amiably. Obviously that isn't doing anything for the later years, with political disagreements and what-not still being brought into the Olympics. It's pathetic really...

China athletes 396 ( one badminton team throwing match)
British athletes 541 ( one bicyclist pretending to be fall on purpose)
