What is your martial arts diet?

Just curious, what do you eat? Anything help you?

Tea and honey both give me energy.

A few years ago, I decided that life was too short to not be enjoyed, and as such I pretty much eat whatever I want. However, when I'm prepping for a competition, I clean up my diet significantly, cutting out junk food (save for a "cheat day"), foods that are high in sodium, and most dairy products save for some light cheese or yogurt.

Although I will say that I tend to stay away from anything but water as far as drinks go. It's cheaper and better at keeping me hydrated than anything else.

I do not consider my eating habits a diet because the word diet has a connotation of something that is not normal and temporary.

I eat 4 small meals a day which is actually less food compared to the usual 3 meals that most people eat. I avoid as much as possible anything that contains refined or bleached flour such as white bread, white rice, etc. or simple carbs such as refined sugar. I eat wholegrain but watches the total amount of calories I consume each day and keep it under 1800 calories

I make sure that I get at least 4 servings of fresh fruits daily - sometimes I make a 4 serving fruit smoothie for the day and drink it spread out over the day. I have at least 1 serving of vegetables each meal even if it is simply munching on a lettuce. I eat lean meats of any kind - beef, pork, chicken, lamb, etc., but I don't eat more than one or two servings each day not because I have anything against meat; it is just how I am.

I drink tea and coffee - more tea than coffee not to give me energy but for the antioxidant and it is healthier than soda pop. I also drink beer, wine, and Scotch but on rare occasions

I also eat just about all the other things considered unhealthy, but very infrequently. For example, I might have a cheesecake twice a year or regular ice cream just as infrequently and that is because those things are to me the abnormal types of food for me whereas the healthy foods are the norm for me.

It's sad. I know that when I go to taekwondo class at 6:00, I can plan on going to McDonald's at 12:00, order a #2 (2 cheeseburgers), large fries, and large OJ. By the time 6:00 rolls around, I am raring to go, and am at the peak of energy and stamina. Of course, my doctor (and common sense) tells me that this can't last. But when I know when I need to work out and need energy - that's what I do.

Other than that, when I otherwise eat a haphazard diet (healthy, if not timely, which I know is another problem), I can't do much but drag myself to class and find ways to avoid doing much. Though, I don't really workout in TKD much anymore, I just do forms to keep skills up, and pretty much assist. So I don't have to worry about my diet in these regards.

As for my other martial arts endeavors, I eat lightly - a banana or smoothie here, glass of milk there.

When i was leading a physically active life it was basic foods, rice, steamed veges and mainly fish or chicken, mussels, salmon ,( 200grms of red meat twice weekly), lots of manuka honey which was used in everything, drank lots of water and cut bread and refined sugar out of diet, etc i didnt take brought supplements or vitamins.
