How to become a self taught gymnast?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
Right so I'm 14 and I love the idea of becoming a gymnast but I have next to no money and there are no gym training places nearby. Is 14 too late to start?

I have my splits on my right leg but that's about all I can do. When I have tried to do a forward walkover I get scared basically I can't do anything but I really want to learn because I've been inspired by people on social media but I don't know where to start

Nothing is impossible and certainly not to late.

Yes you can self taught, make sure you do conditioning excersizes-

Push ups

Sit ups

Plank etc.

Without the physical strength the skills will be floppy a d harder, also stretch, stretching is important so you do not injure yourself.

Don't start at skills like walkovers yet, build up basics forward roll, cartwheel (you know level 1) search it on google, how to be. Level 1 gymnast. Got that level? Great! Train for the next level.

But be carefull gymnastics is WAY harder than it looks but do not give up on your dreams ever!????????????????????

Hi!

I know how it feels to start gymnastics late I didn't start until I was 12 and now I am 14 and a JO level 5. A good place to start is watching tutorials on YouTube, there are many to choose from also if you are scared to go for certain skills ask your mom or dad or one of your friend to watch how to spot you so they can help. Just keep working on your flexibility and strength and with time and practice it will come!

Trying to learn gymnastics in your backyard by yourself I'd like trying to learn brain surgery in the kitchen with YouTube. Please don't try to teach yourself these skills. They look easier than they are when they're being performed by well trained athletes. It's their job to make it look easy. The truth is, gymnastic/tumbling skills require training and proper progression. Trying to throw skills yourself can lead to very serious injuries.

I see self taught 'tumblers' and I cringe everytime. I can always tell the difference. I know their bad technique is causing long-term damage to their bodies.

I can't stress this enough: These skills should only be practiced with a qualified instructor and spotter.

What are your goals? If they include becoming an elite gymnast, it's too late and in any event you can't train yourself. If you just want to tumble, get someone you know to help you.

Don't try and teach yourself gymnastics. Unless you somehow acquire a beam, bars, and a vault, you won't be able to do anything anyways. So that leaves floor, which involves tumbling. Trying to teach yourself tumbling is incredibly dangerous, because you'll most likely do it wrong and hurt yourself. Do yourself a favor and don't attempt it.
