I mean think about it, you have to:
play the right notes
memorize music
memorize your charts
keep in step
sound good
look good
practice A LOT
hold up your instrument
good articulation
keep your chin up (my school at least)
perfect posture
memorize choreography
remember dynamics
count.. always count..
stay in the form
keep an eye on a drum major
fundementals
running a whole show, (NONSTOP MOVING FOR AROUND 8-10 MINUTES) but then. DOING IT ALL OVER AGAIN. and again.
and there's more.
we also have uniforms, like a sports team.
we compete against other bands (and that gets INTENSE around here)
much like in an important sporting event, people are always betting on who will win state... which by the way is a huge deal.
at my school, we practice more than our football team. every wednesday night we have 6 hour practices. mondays are 5:00 - 8:30, and tuesdays are 6-7:30... all of that PLUS we work every single day after school from 1:40- 3:50. we work every bit as hard as most sports teams... also, every other friday night we have a home football game to perform and cheer at, (until 10 or 11 at night) then we have to wake up early the next morning and have a competition ALL DAY and not get back until late all over again. every week.
NO MATTER RAIN, SNOW OR100 DEGREE WEATHER, WE WORK. hard.
so I dont know. I'm leaning towards yes. but I still want to know why or why not other people consider it a sport...?
yes it is a sport. The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively. Physical yes like she said we practice for 6 hours at my school (we have a 30 minuet break in the middle so it's not that bad) we also run and warm up to march the show.
Skill we play and march at the same time . 1 you have to be skilled at playing 2 you have to have precision when marching a hard drill. Rules we have them but they vary. Competitions we have every were. All those who said no go see one or march a perfect one then let us know. Next time before you write how it's not a sport get your facts straight.
Love,
The Marching Band
I don't consider it a sport. It's competitive, it requites talent, practice, and dedication in order to do it well. It's just not a sport to me.
IT IS NOT A SPORT. It counts as physical education but it's not a sport because it's basicly band. Sorry for the disappointment.
I don't consider it sport.. I also don't believe you have 6 hour practices. That's actually illegal.
Yes
Sorry buddy, it's not a sport. Sure, you play for 6 hours a day, but there is no physical toughness involved. You'll never get to your breaking point, or get outside of your comfort zone. Band does not discipline you like sports do. The level of pain found in sports is just not there. Sure, it's hard, but sports are something else. I've seen plenty of kids at my school brag about being on marching band, saying how it's a sport and how they train hours a day. But once they do the fitness test for PE (a simple, basic athletic test required for all high school students in CA) they just can't take the heat.
It's not any more a sport than cheerleading is. And I was a cheerleader.
Of course it is not a sport, it is hard work and can be physically demanding, but it is not a sport.
Im sorry i disagree its one of the hardest things i have ever done yes it is a sport
