Am I too fat for gymnastics?

Posted at: 2015-05-07
So I've REALLY been into gymnastics lately and I was wondering, am I too fat? There are a couple girls at my school that do it and they're like twigs. I'm 5' 6' and about 180 lbs. I have a good 1/2 inch of fat around my belly:(

If I'm not too fat can you give me some advice about being confident in a leotard? Thanks in advance^^

You're not, honey. Twigs? Who the f prefers twigs over beautiful, curvy natural girls who may just have a little bit of fat?

Take a deep breath an itll be fun, I promise! Im pretty much the same as you. I was worried about attending dance class which requires us to wear a vest and very short shorts, so same difference. I have flabby thighs and a slightly rounded tummy, and my BFF is very thin so I felt self concious. When I went? No one noticed. We were all too busy jumping around, having fun. Don't worry, just enjoy yourself! x

What is important is strength to weight ratio. You need to be able to support your bodyweight with your arms and to jump high and so on. But being overweight also increases your risk of injury because the impact is much higher on landings. It also makes you harder to spot which can affect your progress. So while you can do gymnastics if you are overweight it does make it harder. You certainly don't need to be a twig though. If you look at Olympic gymnasts you'll see many of them have a powerful, stocky build.

gymnastics doesn't have weight classes,so if you have the talent, your weight shouldn't stop you.

There are probably advantages to having a lower body weight, though, considering gymnasts have to lift, carry, jump and tumble with their own weight.

Gymnastics is all about flexibility, and that comes with practice and time, don't worry about your body type
