You are not far off the mark, get a good 6 &7, give them time to gel and you are halfway there, sometimes having a really dominant half like Benji can work against you, look at Melbourne, they have turned Widdop into a gun but only because he is paired and works with one of the best in Cronk
Sometimes I think they try to be heroes, doing plays that would be considered magic if they succeeded it, in which most the time they don't, they just don't think and have too much confidence in doing so which makes them believe they can succeed instead of taking the safe route
