I`m a filipino(and currently living here in Washington) and I always think that American football are called football and soccer is soccer. Then I've heard about a national football team for the Philippines and i was just surprised that they are actually playing soccer. That's when i learned that in Europe they also call soccer as football. They call "soccer" FOOTBALL. Preferably in the English language. FOOTBALL is the real term. The US lives in their own little world, which is why the popular Sports such as Basketball, Baseball and American "Football" are only based in the US. Asians also call it football. Other than the US, only countries I know are Canada and Australia.
