Basically, it's a territorial game where a team (on offense) has 4 attempts (downs) to reach 10 yards. If they do, they get a 1st down, and the process starts over until they get a score (touchdown, 6 points, field goal 3) or they concede possession (turnover) and go on defense. Watch the Canadian version instead, it's much more fun (July - Nov).
