Too fat for martial arts?

Lizzy,

I'm going to share my personal experience. I hope it helps.

I started martial arts because of my health. I was morbidly obese and was having issues with chronic bronchitis related to weight and exercise issues. High blood pressure etc. and if you are significantly overweight you know what it's like. I tried biking, walking, exercise classes nothing seemed to help and motivation was a biggie. I was ~5'5" and weighed ~350lbs.

One day on the way home from my lab I saw a sign at a TKD school that said "ONE MONTH FREE"

I pulled in and the Master offered to help. I have been there ever since. The first year I lost over 65lbs.

The second another 40lbs. Best of all got my blood pressure down, haven't had a case of bronchitis,I feel great, I learned a great martial art. I have met some of the most awesome people in the world and have been privileged to pass on to another generation the lessons I have learned.

So GO for it. Give it all you got and a little bit more.

Oh I'm still overweight a little. However I can run a mile in about 10 min. not bad for a guy 70 years old.

I have seen people that are pretty out of shape start martial arts. Martial arts can also help you get into shape. If you want to take martial arts, go ahead.

I do not think waiting is a good idea. You may start off a little slower but you will still make progress. But look at several styles and talk to the Sensei while you re there. Tell him why you want to train. Do not fall for elaborate promises.

Start working out if you feel "Too fat". Martial Arts isn't only just a "Getting in shape thing" you know.

I am very fat, but I want to get into shape. I've always dreamed of taking martial arts and am wondering if it's best to lose weight first, then start taking lessons. Obviously, it's going to be a bit embarrassing to be the heaviest person there, but I'm tired of waiting for the "right time". I'm also tired of living my life like this.

Advice is appreciated. Thanks!
