You put any cop in the ring against any trainer fighter and the cop will lose, badly.
People do anything to sell their martial arts skill. Give it a fancy name and the people will come. Give yourself a rank and more people will come. I can make up any style and declare myself grand puba of that style. It means nothing. So don't believe everything you hear of it.
I think it varies from one locality to the next how much and what a police officer will learn. They definitely don't have time nor funds for train in a huge arsenal. Just a few basic moves to get them out of a bad situation and to get to their gun or a fellow police officer joins to help. I would not engage in empty hand combat if I carried a gun. Way too much risk in that and I bet at the end of the day any police officer wants to go home in one piece to their families.
As some of the others have said....Mostly we call this "defensive tactics". A mash-up of various techniques from different sources.
The closest thing to a system I'm aware of the "PPCT" system invented by Siddle.
(40 years in police work)
It is not a specific martial in itself.
Police train in a variety of styles and learn basic/intermediate technique to apprehend a suspect.
Things like:
Chokes
Holds
Pressure Points
Vulnerable Parts of the Body
Joint Locks
Some Throws and Sweeps
etc.
The very basics in a short amount of time.
there is no police method of martial arts.
police train in various styles depending upon what the their academy is teaching. there is no set standard
I think it depends really, and its generally a modified version of different martial arts, so it isnt that good. If you want to learn martial arts do something like Jeet kune do, Ninjitsu, Krav mi gra or wing chun, those are some of the best martial arts.
Some of it can be.
I have seen people claiming dan grade in police method martial art.. is police method a specific martial art or is it just a combination of arts used by law enforcement agents? If it is a specific art where can I find its details like its international body, methods etc? Where can I learn it?
