America is going through troubling times and questioning it's self pronounce superiority over other nations as they slide into debt and a possible recession.
The win at the Olympics gives them back some of that pride - thats why its such a big deal.

Also given how the US TV puts the olympics, it looks like the USA win pretty much everything, or even "a lot", as seen in one comment. But it won only 15% of the Gold's. available.
They are the biggest sporting event on the planet, they are even bigger than the World Football cup (next), Cricket World cup, and even the in house competition called Superbowl.
The Olympics are important to every country taking part, not just Americans!
America loves to win and at the Olympics they win a lot, then people come here and crow about it a lot....
