I was at the Newport v Wrexham match yesterday and noticed that Christian Jolley was wearing gloves even though the weather was quite warm! He's not foreign so it's not like he's not used to the temperature in this country. Why do players do it? Yes of course. They wear gloves not for fashion but to prevent any rash or injury in the hand. Because the balls that were shot comes very fast and a sudden block creates a friction of heating between the hand and the ball. Also it is wear to grab the ball in a comfortable way because the gloves are big enough to grab the ball completely while in bear hand it's not possible and may sometimes slips down for wet.

So they don't get their hands dirty! Obvious really.
