The winner of the Scottish Championship is promoted to the Scottish Premiership to replace the team that came last in the Premiership. This does sometimes vary though in the case that a team is forced by the SFA to drop down leagues because they were cheating or had money problems. An example of this was in season 2011/2012 when Rangers were forced to go to the 4th tier of Scottish football (then the 3rd Division) after they were liquidated. Dunfermline had finished bottom that year and dropped to the then 1st Division (now Scottish Championship). Ross County FC were promoted as they had finished first along with Dundee FC who took the place if Rangers as they had finished second.
